Rough bluegrass is often used to overseed dormant warm-season turfgrasses. Overseeding typically occurs in the fall to provide a playing surface throughout the winter months. As such, turfgrass managers typically use herbicides to remove the rough bluegrass in the spring just as the warm-season grasses are coming out of dormancy. Rough bluegrass has an alter ego as a noxious weed contaminant of cool-season grass seed. It usually occurs in irrigated turf and is extremely difficult to eradicate once established. It has a distinctive apple green color and stringy texture.
